Primary 5 Math Tuition, built to click

P5 is the heaviest syllabus jump in primary, and the real foundation for PSLE. At Genius Plus Academy we teach ratio, fractions and rate through the bar-unit method, then drill the 3-Pass Checking Protocol that fixes careless slips. Build the P5 to P6 bridge properly here and the exam year is far calmer. Small classes, taught from our own books.

What we build in P5

  • Ratio & the bar-unit method: the question we keep asking is "what does 1 unit represent?"
  • Fractions that finally make sense: drawn on the bar, not memorised as rules.
  • Rate & the first speed problems: the topics that separate grades at P6.
  • The 3-Pass Checking Protocol: the real fix for "careless" mistakes.

Why P5 is the year that decides PSLE

PSLE is mostly built on P5.

P5 brings the steepest jump in the primary syllabus: ratio, harder fractions, rate and the first speed questions. Most of what the PSLE rewards in P6 is laid down here. A child who masters P5 walks into the exam year with the heavy lifting already done; a child who only half-learns it spends P6 patching holes. We make sure it is the former.

The bar-unit method for ratio

Ratio is where many P5 children come unstuck. We anchor every ratio problem on one question, "what does 1 unit represent?", and draw it on the bar until the relationship is impossible to misread.

Fractions & rate, drawn to click

Harder fractions and the first rate problems are taught visually, not as rules to memorise. The same Before-Change-After bar that worked in lower primary now carries the heavier P5 reasoning.

The 3-Pass Checking Protocol

A question-compliance check, a reasonableness check and an arithmetic audit. It is the real fix for the "careless" marks a P5 child throws away on questions they actually knew.

GENIUSBOOK, Genius Plus Academy's in-house Primary 5 math textbooks

Taught from our own books, not a resale workbook.

Your P5 child learns from a complete, in-house curriculum, we write and publish our own, 60+ textbooks and 40+ workbooks, refined over eight years. The P5 GENIUSBOOK covers each term; topic workbooks drill ratio, fractions and rate, the exact structures that carry the most weight into PSLE.

Why the P5 topics carry the most weight

The heavy P5 topics are the heavy PSLE topics.

We tagged every PSLE Math question from 2012 to 2025 and counted what the papers actually test. The structures that arrive or deepen in P5, fractions, rate and the proportional reasoning behind ratio, are among the most-tested year after year. That is why getting P5 right is the surest way to make P6 lighter. These figures describe papers already sat, never a prediction.

78

Fractions leads the whole PSLE paper and appears in every one of the fourteen years we counted. P5 is where the hard fractions land.

14/14

Volume & Rate has appeared in every Paper 2, fourteen years running. Rate is a P5 topic, taught before it is tested.

Checking passes in our protocol, the routine we drill from P5 so careless slips do not survive into the exam year.

If the foundation has a gap

Coming into P5 behind? Close the prior-year gap first.

When a child hits the P5 jump without a solid P3 to P4 base, the honest fix is to rebuild the foundation, not just push forward. Our P4/P5 Expedite is the "Time Machine": diagnostic-led acceleration with prior-year foundation materials, so the gap closes while the current syllabus keeps moving. Not sure which your child needs? We will tell you at the diagnostic.

Already a GPA student? You do not need to choose from here, your teacher will recommend exactly what your child needs.

"Before joining GPA, my son had major exam anxiety and barely passed his Math tests. The tutors helped him score 78 in Prelims. The team even helped with English and Science before PSLE, out of pure dedication."

Steady gains like this often start with getting the P5 foundation right. Based on GPA's internal tracking of recent cohorts; individual results vary with each student's starting point and effort.

P5 math, questions parents ask

Why is P5 such a big jump?

P5 introduces ratio, harder fractions, rate and the first speed problems, all at once, and the multi-step reasoning they demand. It is the heaviest content year in primary, and because most of it is tested again at PSLE, it is the real foundation for P6. We teach it visually so the jump feels like a step, not a cliff.

My child keeps making careless mistakes. Can that be fixed?

Yes, and "careless" is usually a habit, not a personality. We drill the 3-Pass Checking Protocol from P5: a question-compliance check (did I answer what was asked?), a reasonableness check (is this answer sensible?), and an arithmetic audit. Trained as a routine, it catches the marks a child throws away on questions they actually knew.

How big are the P5 classes?

Capped at 8 students, so every gap is caught and no child hides at the back. Every lesson is recorded for rewatching, homework is marked and returned with personalised feedback each week, and 1-to-1 consults are unlimited at no extra charge.

My child is starting P5 already behind. Is it too late?

Usually not, but the honest fix often means rebuilding a prior-year gap rather than just pushing forward. Our P4/P5 Expedite, the "Time Machine", uses prior-year foundation materials to close that gap while the current syllabus keeps moving. We will tell you at the diagnostic which path fits.

Do you offer a trial lesson?

Yes, a free trial lesson, one per child, starting with a short diagnostic. We usually reply within the hour. No pressure, no hard sell, we would rather you make a properly informed decision than a rushed one.
