Private 1-to-1 Math, the last resort, not the default

Most children thrive in a small group, with peers to learn alongside and the room to struggle a little on their own. So we say it plainly: try group classes first, and reach for 1-to-1 only when your child genuinely needs more.

Private 1-to-1 is GPA's premium individual Math tuition for Primary and Secondary, taught one student at a time from our own curriculum, on a schedule that fits your week. It is the right answer for a specific child with specific gaps. For most, a small group is the better first step, and we will say so.

Our honest position

If your child has not yet tried a small group with us, that is usually the better, and more affordable, place to start. Learning to wrestle with a hard question independently is part of growing up, and a good group gives individual attention while keeping that healthy productive struggle. We recommend 1-to-1 when there are real gaps, a learning style that needs closer guidance, or a schedule that group classes cannot fit. Not sure which you are looking at? Book a free diagnostic and we will tell you honestly.

The thinking

More attention is not always more learning.

A child who is always rescued never learns to recover on their own. The aim is independence, and the right amount of support is the smallest amount that gets there.

That is why we think of support as a ladder, not a default. Most families never need the top rung. We would rather your child climbed only as far as they have to, and learned to come back down.

1 · Try first

Let your child attempt it alone. Struggling productively is part of learning.

2 · Small group

If support is needed, a group usually does it: attention, feedback, peers.

3 · 1-to-1

Only when there are real gaps, a different pace, or a schedule that needs it.

When it is the right fit

The cases where 1-to-1 genuinely earns its place.

We do not push 1-to-1 on every enquiry. These are the situations where one student, one tutor is the honest recommendation, and where a small group would leave your child underserved.

01

Significant, specific gaps · foundations from earlier years are missing and need rebuilding before pace can pick up.

02

A learning style that needs closer guidance · a child who needs to think aloud, or to slow down without holding a group back.

03

A schedule that group classes cannot fit · competing commitments, irregular weeks, or a level we do not run a group for nearby.

04

Exam-year intervention · a major paper ahead and few weeks left, where targeted, individual work uses each hour fully.

05

Anxiety around the subject · a quieter, private setting where a child can ask anything without an audience.

06

A top-distinction target · the last refinements, where a tutor shapes the work to one student's specific weak spots.

Inside the hour

A 1-to-1 hour, shaped around one child.

No improvising, and no generic worksheet. Every lesson is taught from our own curriculum, then chosen and paced for this student in particular.

Diagnose, then teach

The tutor starts from what is actually breaking down, not a fixed syllabus order, and rebuilds the gap before moving on.

Customised materials

Questions are drawn from the materials we write and publish ourselves, 60+ textbooks and 40+ workbooks, matched to this child's level and pace.

Documented and followed up

What was taught, how it went, and what comes next is recorded each lesson, with WhatsApp support between sessions.

Every private lesson is also paired with one group class recording on our LMS, so your child gets extra exposure beyond the 1-to-1 hour.

What you are paying for

More than a tutor who turns up.

A freelance tutor gives you an hour. GPA's 1-to-1 gives you the same curriculum, materials and standards our group classes run on, applied to one child.

Vetted, experienced tutors

Senior Tutors are former MOE school teachers with classroom experience, personally vetted by Mrs Eileen Toh. You are not gambling on an unknown.

The standard does not drop because the class is one.

Our own curriculum

Every lesson draws from materials we write and publish ourselves, 60+ textbooks and 40+ workbooks, refined over eight years of classroom use, not photocopied from elsewhere.

A record, not a black box

Progress is documented each lesson and shared with you, so you can see what changed, what is next, and whether 1-to-1 is still the right call.

Who it suits

A few children, not most.

1-to-1 tends to be the right call when:

  • a group has already been tried, and the gap is too specific for it;
  • the child needs to set the pace, slower or faster, without a class;
  • scheduling rules out the regular group slots near you;
  • there is an exam ahead and the hours have to count;
  • anxiety means the child needs a private, low-pressure setting.

Primary

Foundations and PSLE-year support, where a small gap quietly compounds.

Secondary

From lower-secondary recovery to O-Level targeting, paced to the student.

Probably group instead

No tried-and-failed group, no specific gap, no schedule clash. Start there, and save.

What's included

Every hour comes with four things.

  • Customised materials, selected from the curriculum we write and publish ourselves and tailored to your child's level, gaps and pace.
  • One group class recording per private lesson on our LMS, at no extra cost, for exposure beyond the 1-to-1 hour.
  • Documented progress, what was taught, how it went and what comes next, recorded each lesson and shared with you.
  • WhatsApp support between lessons, for quick questions and regular updates from your child's tutor.

Why the lessons feel different

We teach from books we wrote ourselves.

A 1-to-1 lesson is only as good as the questions it is built on. Ours come from the curriculum we write and publish in-house, 60+ textbooks and 40+ workbooks, refined over eight years of classroom use. Your child's tutor reaches into that library and pulls exactly what fits, instead of improvising around a generic assessment book.

Tutors, format & fees

Clear, per-hour pricing by tutor.

Where

At any GPA branch, or live on Zoom. Home tuition is possible with a small transport surcharge.

When

On demand. We agree a regular weekly slot that fits your child's schedule, and adjust as needed.

The trial is paid, on purpose

Unlike our group classes, the 1-to-1 trial is a paid session at the chosen tutor's rate. It buys a real, full lesson with a tutor matched to your child, then you decide with no pressure. If it is not the right fit, we will suggest a different tutor, a different tier, or group classes.

Already in a GPA group class?

Tell us before you add 1-to-1.

If your child is already in one of our small groups and you are wondering whether to add private hours, talk to us first. Often a homework-support tweak or a short, targeted block of 1-to-1 does the job, rather than an open-ended commitment. We would rather you spent only what your child actually needs.

Questions parents ask

How much does 1-to-1 cost?

From $150 per hour with a Senior Tutor, and $200 per hour with our Founder, Mrs Eileen Toh. The same rate applies to Primary and Secondary, because pricing is by tutor, not by level.

Is 1-to-1 better than group classes?

Not necessarily, and for most children it is not the better first step. Small groups give individual attention, instant feedback, peers to learn alongside, and the room to struggle a little independently. We recommend 1-to-1 only when there are real gaps, a learning style that needs closer guidance, or a schedule that group classes cannot fit. If you are unsure, book a free diagnostic and we will advise honestly.

Is the trial free?

No. Unlike our group classes, the 1-to-1 trial is a paid session at the chosen tutor's hourly rate. It is a full, real lesson with a tutor matched to your child, after which you decide with no pressure. If it is not the right fit, we will suggest a different tutor, a different tier, or group classes.

What levels and subjects do you cover?

Mathematics, for Primary and Secondary. Lessons are taught from our own curriculum, the materials we write and publish in-house, 60+ textbooks and 40+ workbooks, customised to your child's level and pace.

Where are lessons held, and when?

At any of our branches, or live on Zoom, on a regular slot that fits your child's week. Home tuition is available on request with a small transport surcharge. There is no fixed term, so you can enquire any time.

What is included besides the lesson?

Four things every hour: customised materials from our own curriculum, one group class recording per private lesson on the LMS, documented progress notes shared with you, and WhatsApp support between lessons.
