Step-by-step solution

Bar models: Gopal = Henry + $2030 with total $3850; then Gopal's $2940 split into 3 equal parts of $980 against Henry's $910
Models: (a) "top up"/"take away" on the $3850 total; (b) Gopal's pay split into 3 equal day-blocks of $980 vs Henry's $910.

(a) \((3850 + 2030) \div 2 = 5880 \div 2 = \$2940\) (Gopal). *(Henry \(= \$910\).)*

(b) Henry and Gopal worked \(d\) and \(3d\) days. Per the same number of days \(d\), Gopal earns \(2940 \div 3 = \$980\) while Henry earns \(\$910\), a gap of \(\$70\). Since Gopal earns $5 more per day, \(d = 70 \div 5 = 14\), so Gopal worked \(14 \times 3 = \textbf{42}\) days. (Check: Henry $65/day × 14 = $910; Gopal $70/day × 42 = $2940 ✓) Flag: the GPA key's one-line answer for (a) says "$980", but its own working, the worked-on paper and independent solving all give $2940; $980 is the intermediate per-14-day block from (b).

Answer: (a) $2940; (b) 42 days

Same structure, different costume

A question is hard because of its structure, not its story.

Change egg tarts to badges, a tank to two tanks, a ring of card to a folded sheet, and a child sees a brand new problem. The lock underneath is the same, and so is the key. Once a student can name the structure, a whole row of questions that look different start to open the same way.

It is also where marks really leak. Across fourteen years of papers, the marks lost in PSLE math leak at the reading far more than at the arithmetic, which is exactly why recognising the structure fixes them. We call this Lock and Key: name the lock, then the key follows.
