Year-End Headstart 2026 · Sec 1 going to Sec 2 · 19 to 20 Nov or 5 to 6 Dec

Sec 1 to Sec 2 Math Headstart

Two days. Four topics. One marked paper.

Most Sec 1 students can simplify an expression. Fewer can set one up from a word problem, a shape or a diagram, and Sec 2 word problems ask for that. The year-end holiday is a good time to make sure your child can do it.

Day 1: algebra as Sec 1 uses it, in real-world applications, in area, perimeter and volume, and in geometry. Day 2: Sec 2 simultaneous equations, then a paper marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's written notes. Two tutors on each run.

Why Sec 1 to Sec 2

Day 1 is about using the algebra your child already has.

In Sec 2 the questions expect your child to turn a situation into an equation and solve it. Day 1 is practice at that.

Day 1 is spent forming equations from real situations, from area, perimeter and volume, and from geometry. Day 2 introduces simultaneous equations, one of the first Sec 2 topics, and your child then sits a paper on all four topics. The tutor marks it the same afternoon.

Day 1

Algebra in real-world applications, in area, perimeter and volume, and in geometry.

Day 2 morning

Simultaneous equations, one of the first Sec 2 topics.

Day 2 afternoon

A paper on all four topics, marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's notes.

Day by day

By the end of Day 2, here is what your child will have done.

The programme follows Genius Plus lesson codes 7D11 to 7D15, taught from our own in-house Sec 1 and Sec 2 materials, the same curriculum our weekly secondary classes use.

Day 1 · Thu 19 Nov or Sat 5 Dec · 10am to 3pm

Algebra where Sec 1 uses it.

  • 7D11 Algebra in real-world applications: forming and solving equations from word problems, rates and money.
  • 7D12 Algebra in area, perimeter and volume: expressions for lengths, areas and volumes, and the equations they lead to.
  • 7D13 Algebra in geometry: angles and lengths written in x, and the equations that follow from angle properties.

Day 2 · Fri 20 Nov or Sun 6 Dec · 10am to 3pm

Simultaneous equations, then the paper.

  • 7D14 Simultaneous equations: two unknowns, elimination and substitution, and the word problems that need them.
  • 7D15 Assessment and review: a paper on the four topics, marked the same afternoon, then the tutor goes through every question with the class. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes.

Your child has done Sec 1 algebra. Sec 2 teachers will assume they can use it in a problem. By the end of Day 2 your child will have used algebra in applications, in area, perimeter and volume and in geometry at Sec 2 standard, met simultaneous equations, and sat a marked paper on all four.

See how we teach it

Four sample questions, with the working we teach.

Each one starts with a situation in words or a diagram and ends with an equation. Forming the equation is the step we practise; solving it follows.

Sample question. The 2026 camp materials are still being finalised.

Question 1 · Algebra in real-world applications

A concert ticket for adults costs $r. A student ticket costs $6 less than an adult ticket. (a) Write the student ticket price in terms of r. (b) Mr Tan and his wife brought their three children to the concert. Write an expression, in terms of r, for the total cost that Mr Tan had to pay in dollars. (c) If r = 35, find the total cost that Mr Tan had to pay.

Step 1. Name what you know in terms of r first: an adult ticket is r, so a student ticket is r − 6. Then count the tickets: 2 adults and 3 students.

Step 2. Add the tickets, collect the like terms, then substitute r = 35.

(a) Student ticket = $(r − 6)

(b) Total = 2r + 3(r − 6) = 2r + 3r − 18

Total = $(5r − 18)

(c) When r = 35: 5(35) − 18 = 175 − 18

Total = $157

Ans = (a) $(r − 6) (b) $(5r − 18) (c) $157

Question 2 · Algebra in area, perimeter and volume

In the diagram below, ABCD is a trapezium where AB // DC. AB = (y + 4) cm, DC = (3y + 5) cm and the height is 24 cm. Given that the area of the trapezium is 636 cm², find the value of y.

ABCD(y + 4) cm(3y + 5) cm24 cm

Step 1. Write the area formula with the algebra in it: half the sum of the parallel sides, times the height.

Step 2. Simplify the bracket first, then solve the equation.

Area = 1/2 × (y + 4 + 3y + 5) × 24 = 636

12(4y + 9) = 636

4y + 9 = 53

4y = 44

y = 11

Ans = y = 11

Question 3 · Algebra in real-world applications · forming the equation

A taxi charges $5 as a base fare and $2 per kilometre. If the total fare was $25, how many kilometre(s) were traveled?

Step 1. Let the distance be x km. The fare is the base fare plus $2 for every kilometre.

5 + 2x = 25

2x = 20

x = 10

Ans = 10 km

Question 4 · Simultaneous equations · the Sec 2 headstart topic

Solve the following simultaneous equations using the Elimination Method. 3x + 4y = 10 and 7x + 8y = 14.

Step 1. Make the y terms match. Doubling the first equation gives 6x + 8y = 20.

Step 2. Subtract to remove y, then substitute back to find y, and check in the other equation.

6x + 8y = 20

(7x + 8y) − (6x + 8y) = 14 − 20

x = −6

3(−6) + 4y = 10

4y = 28

y = 7

Check: 7(−6) + 8(7) = −42 + 56 = 14

Ans = x = −6, y = 7

Write down what x stands for, form the equation, solve, then check the answer against the question. That habit is what Day 1 trains.

What you get back

You will see which questions your child got wrong, and why.

On the afternoon of Day 2 your child sits a paper on the four topics. The tutor marks it the same afternoon. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes. The progress consult follows after the camp.

Your child's marked paper

Marked the same afternoon, so you can see the working for each question and where the marks went.

The tutor's written notes

The tutor writes down which question types your child can now do on their own, and one or two things to practise before Sec 2.

A 30-minute progress consult

After the camp we sit down with you and go through the gaps and strengths we saw over the two days, where your child stands going into Sec 2, and what to focus on in Term 1.

A school test tells you how many marks went. This tells you which ones, and why.

How the two venues on each run work

Both venues run at the same time, with one tutor in each classroom and the two rooms linked live. When one tutor is teaching a topic, she is on screen in both rooms while the other tutor walks the classroom and works with the children at their desks. Zoom families join the same live lesson from home. Whichever venue you choose, your child gets both tutors.

Who it suits

For Sec 1 parents who want the algebra working before Sec 2 builds on it.

This camp is meant for the Sec 1 student who can do the algebra exercises but gets stuck when the question is a word problem or a diagram. If your child already forms equations comfortably, our weekly secondary class is the better fit, and we will tell you so if you ask.

The camp is a good fit if you:

  • have seen the Sec 1 algebra marks slip in the second half of the year;
  • want your child to form equations from word problems and diagrams;
  • want your child to meet simultaneous equations before the class does;
  • want to see the actual marked paper and hear from the tutor where the marks are going;
  • are new to Genius Plus and want to see how we teach secondary math.

Not sure? Send us your child's most recent Sec 1 Math paper on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether this camp fits.

New to GPA

Your child does not need to have attended Genius Plus before.

A word from Mrs Toh

"You plan for success. You do not wish for it."

One of my boys came home with 20 out of 30 for his Math weighted assessment and told me full marks was too far away for him. So I asked him: how far is 20 from 30? Very far, he said. Can you improve by one mark a day? Yes, he said, one mark is doable. Then how many days to 30? He thought about it. Ten.

Real life is harder than ten days, of course. But that is how I think about a child and Math. Our job as parents is not to panic. It is to find out which marks are going, fix one thing at a time, and let the small wins add up.

That is what these two days are for. We teach one, guide one, then let them try one, on algebra in real situations, in shapes and in geometry. On Day 2 your child meets simultaneous equations and sits a paper that the tutor marks that afternoon. You go home knowing which marks are going and why, and where to start.
