Year-End Headstart 2026 · P5 going to P6 · three runs, 23 Nov to 10 Dec

P5 to P6 Math Headstart

Two days. Four topics. One marked paper.

Next year is PSLE year. The year-end holiday is a good time to make sure the P5 topics PSLE questions use most are solid, before P6 starts building on them.

Day 1: the three P5 topics PSLE questions keep coming back to: Angles, Fractions and Percentage. Day 2: P6 Ratio, then a PSLE-style paper marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's written notes on where the marks are going. Two principal tutors on each run.

Why P5 to P6

Know where your child stands before P6 starts.

Angles, Fractions and Percentage turn up in PSLE papers on their own and hidden inside other questions.

These are the three P5 topics PSLE questions use most. On Day 1 your child works them as question types, so they read a question and know which method it wants. On Day 2 they meet P6 Ratio, the first big P6 topic, then sit a PSLE-style paper on all four. The tutor marks it the same afternoon, so you see which marks went and why.

Day 1

Angles, Fractions and Percentage, worked at PSLE standard.

Day 2 morning

P6 Ratio, the first big P6 topic.

Day 2 afternoon

A PSLE-style paper on all four topics, marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's notes.

Day by day

By the end of Day 2, here is what your child will have done.

The programme follows Genius Plus lesson codes 5D11 to 5D15, taught from our own in-house materials, the same curriculum our weekly P5 and P6 classes use.

Day 1 · Mon 23 Nov, Tue 1 Dec or Wed 9 Dec · 10am to 3pm

The three P5 topics.

  • 5D11 Angles (Geometry): angles in triangles, quadrilaterals and figures made of both, with the reasoning written out step by step.
  • 5D12 Fractions: fraction of a set, fractions of a remainder, and the multi-step fraction problem sums.
  • 5D13 · Percentage: percentage of a quantity, discount and GST, and the problem sums that mix percentage with fractions.

Day 2 · Tue 24 Nov, Wed 2 Dec or Thu 10 Dec · 10am to 3pm

P6 Ratio, then the paper.

  • 5D14 Ratio at P6 level: reading and writing ratios, equivalent ratios, and ratio with fractions.
  • 5D15 Assessment and review: a PSLE-style paper on the four topics, marked the same afternoon, then the tutor goes through every question with the class. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes.

Your child has done all three Day 1 topics in P5. P6 teachers will assume they can already do them. By the end of Day 2 your child will have worked each one at PSLE standard, met P6 Ratio, and sat a marked PSLE-style paper on all four.

See how we teach it

Four sample questions, with the working we teach.

They look like PSLE questions, and each one is solved by first naming the question type: a remainder question, a working-backwards question, a discount-then-GST question, and a first Ratio question.

Sample question. The 2026 camp materials are still being finalised.

Question 1 · Fractions · part-whole remainder

A bag contains ten-cent, twenty-cent and fifty-cent coins. 3/4 of the coins are ten-cent coins and 2/3 of the remaining coins are 20-cent coins. The rest of the coins are 50-cent coins. If there are 15 fifty-cent coins, how many coins are there in the bag altogether?

Step 1. Draw the whole bag as one bar. Three quarters are ten-cent coins. Cut the remaining quarter into thirds: two thirds are 20-cent, one third is 50-cent. That makes 12 equal units.

Coinsten-cent coins: 9 units20-cent153/4 of the coinsthe remaining 1/450-cent

Step 2. The 50-cent coins are 1 unit out of 12, and there are 15 of them.

1 unit = 15 coins

12 units = 15 × 12

12 units = 180 coins

Ans = 180 coins

Question 2 · Percentage · working backwards

Xander, Yve and Zai had a total of $3 600. Xander gave 25% of his money to Yve. Yve then gave 1/3 of the amount of money she had to Zai. The three children had the same amount of money in the end. How much money did Yve have at first?

Step 1. Start from the end. The total does not change, so each child ends with $3 600 ÷ 3 = $1 200. Then undo each step in reverse.

Step, in reverseAmount
Each child at the end$1 200
Yve kept 2/3 after giving Zai 1/3, so before that she had$1 800
Xander kept 75%, so he started with $1 200 ÷ 3 × 4 and gave Yve$400
Yve at first = $1 800 − $400$1 400

End: each child has $3 600 ÷ 3 = $1 200

Yve before giving Zai = $1 200 ÷ 2 × 3 = $1 800

Xander at first = $1 200 ÷ 3 × 4 = $1 600

Xander gave Yve = $1 600 − $1 200 = $400

Yve at first = $1 800 − $400 = $1 400

Ans = $1 400

Question 3 · Percentage · discount, then GST

Farah bought a computer with a 20% discount off the original price of $2 500. She also had to pay 9% GST on the discounted price. How much GST did Farah have to pay?

Step 1. Two percentages, one after the other. Find the discounted price first, then take the GST on that.

Discounted price = 80% × $2 500 = $2 000

GST = 9% × $2 000

GST = $180

Ans = $180

Question 4 · Ratio · the P6 headstart topic, a first question

There are 24 red buttons and 28 blue buttons in a box. Find the ratio of the number of red buttons to the total number of buttons in the box.

Step 1. Read what is being compared: red to the total, and the total is red and blue together.

Total = 24 + 28 = 52

Red : Total = 24 : 52

24 : 52 = 6 : 13

Ans = 6 : 13

Read the question, name the type, then draw the model or set out the table before you work. That is the habit Day 1 practises.

What you get back

You will see which questions your child got wrong, and why.

On the afternoon of Day 2 your child sits a paper on the four topics, PSLE-style. The tutor marks it the same afternoon. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes. The progress consult follows after the camp.

Your child's marked paper

Marked the same afternoon, so you can see the working for each question and where the marks went.

The tutor's written notes

The tutor writes down which question types your child can now do on their own, and one or two things to practise before P6.

A 30-minute progress consult

After the camp we sit down with you and go through the gaps and strengths we saw over the two days, where your child stands going into P6, and what to focus on in Term 1.

A school test tells you how many marks went. This tells you which ones, and why.

Who it suits

For P5 parents who want the P5 topics firm before P6 starts.

This camp is meant for the child who knows the P5 topics in class but loses marks when they turn up in a long PSLE-style question. If your child is already scoring comfortably on problem sums, our weekly P6 Math class is the better fit, and we will tell you so if you ask.

The camp is a good fit if you:

  • want to know, on paper, where your child stands before the PSLE year;
  • want Angles, Fractions and Percentage firm before P6 revision starts;
  • want your child to meet P6 Ratio before the class does;
  • are new to Genius Plus and want to see how we teach before deciding about P6.

Not sure? Send us your child's most recent P5 Math paper on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether this camp fits.

New to GPA

Your child does not need to have attended Genius Plus before.

A word from Mrs Toh

"You plan for success. You do not wish for it."

One of my boys came home with 20 out of 30 for his Math weighted assessment and told me full marks was too far away for him. So I asked him: how far is 20 from 30? Very far, he said. Can you improve by one mark a day? Yes, he said, one mark is doable. Then how many days to 30? He thought about it. Ten.

Real life is harder than ten days, of course. But that is how I think about a child and Math. Our job as parents is not to panic. It is to find out which marks are going, fix one thing at a time, and let the small wins add up.

That is what these two days are for. We teach one, guide one, then let them try one, on Angles, Fractions and Percentage, the three P5 topics PSLE questions use most. On Day 2 your child meets Ratio and sits a PSLE-style paper that the tutor marks that afternoon. You go home knowing which marks are going and why, and where to start.
