P3 to P4 Math Headstart

Two days. Four topics. One marked paper.

In P4 the problem sums get longer and the numbers get bigger, but the ideas underneath are P3 ideas. The November holiday is a good time to make sure those ideas are solid, before P4 starts building on them.

Day 1: the three P3 topics P4 keeps coming back to: Fractions, Area and Perimeter, and Measurement. Day 2: P4 Angles, then a paper marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's written notes on what your child can do and what to practise next. Taught by Mrs Eileen Toh and Ms JS Lee.

Why P3 to P4

Most P4 problem sums are P3 topics with more steps.

The first P4 problem sums assume P3 Fractions, Area and Perimeter and Measurement are already there.

These are the three P3 topics P4 reuses straight away, with more steps and a model drawing expected. On Day 1 your child works them again, with a drawing and the working written out. On Day 2 they meet P4 Angles, the first geometry P4 teaches, then sit a paper on all four. The tutor marks it the same afternoon.

Day 1

Fractions, Area and Perimeter, Measurement, worked at P4 standard.

Day 2 morning

Angles, the first P4 geometry topic.

Day 2 afternoon

A paper on all four topics, marked the same afternoon, handed back with the tutor's notes.

Day by day

By the end of Day 2, here is what your child will have done.

The programme follows Genius Plus lesson codes 3D11 to 3D15, taught from our own in-house materials, the same curriculum our weekly P3 and P4 classes use.

Day 1 · Fri 27 Nov · 10am to 3pm

The three P3 topics.

  • 3D11 Fractions: equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering, adding and subtracting, and the first fraction word problems.
  • 3D12 Area and Perimeter: squares, rectangles and the figures made of several squares that P4 tests.
  • 3D13 Measurement: length, mass, volume and time, with the conversions set out cleanly.

Day 2 · Mon 30 Nov · 10am to 3pm

P4 Angles, then the paper.

  • 3D14 Geometry (Angles): naming, measuring and reasoning with angles, the first P4 geometry topic.
  • 3D15 Assessment and review: a paper on the four topics, marked the same afternoon, then the tutor goes through every question with the class. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes.

The two days are a Friday and the following Monday. Your child has done all three Day 1 topics in P3, and P4 teachers will assume they can already do them. By the end of Day 2 your child will have worked each one at P4 standard, met P4 Angles, and sat a marked paper on all four.

See how we teach it

Four sample questions, with the working we teach.

These are the kinds of questions your child does on Day 1: measurement in units and gaps, area from a drawing, and equivalent fractions.

Sample question. The 2026 camp materials are still being finalised.

Question 1 · Measurement · units

A roll of gold ribbon is 360 cm long. The roll of gold ribbon is 4 times as long as a roll of silver ribbon. What is the total length of 5 such rolls of silver ribbon? Give your answer in metres and centimetres.

Step 1. Draw the gold ribbon as 4 units and the silver ribbon as 1 unit.

Gold1 unit1 unit1 unit1 unit360 cmSilver1 unit?

Step 2. Four units are 360 cm, so one unit is 90 cm. Five silver rolls are five units. Then change centimetres to metres and centimetres.

1 unit = 360 ÷ 4 = 90 cm

5 units = 90 × 5 = 450 cm

450 cm = 4 m 50 cm

Ans = 4 m 50 cm

Question 2 · Measurement · gaps

Randy hangs 10 light sticks at an equal distance apart on a wire. The distance between the 3rd and the 6th light stick is 135 cm. What is the length of the wire used for hanging the 10 light sticks?

Step 1. Draw the ten sticks and count the gaps between them. From the 3rd to the 6th stick is 3 gaps.

12345678910135 cm = 3 gaps? = 9 gaps

Step 2. Three gaps are 135 cm, so one gap is 45 cm. Ten sticks make 9 gaps.

1 gap = 135 ÷ 3 = 45 cm

9 gaps = 45 × 9

9 gaps = 405 cm

Ans = 405 cm

Question 3 · Area · a figure made of squares

The figure below is made up of 3 identical squares of length 8 cm. Find the area of the figure.

8 cm8 cm

Step 1. Find the area of one square, then count how many squares make the figure. Whatever shape the three squares make, the area is three squares' worth.

Area of 1 square = 8 × 8 = 64 cm²

Area of figure = 64 × 3

Area of figure = 192 cm²

Ans = 192 cm²

Question 4 · Fractions · equivalent fractions

What is the missing number in the box? ▢/9 = 12/18

Step 1. Look at the denominators. 18 becomes 9 when you divide by 2, so divide the numerator by 2 as well.

18 ÷ 2 = 9

12 ÷ 2 = 6

6/9 = 12/18

Ans = 6

Once a child can draw the picture and write the working for a P3 question, the P4 version is the same habit with bigger numbers and one more step.

What you get back

You will see which questions your child got wrong, and why.

On the afternoon of Day 2 your child sits a paper on the four topics. The tutor marks it the same afternoon. Your child brings home the marked paper and the tutor's written notes. The progress consult follows after the camp.

Your child's marked paper

Marked the same afternoon, so you can see the working for each question and where the marks went.

The tutor's written notes

The tutor writes down which question types your child can now do on their own, and one or two things to practise before P4.

A 30-minute progress consult

After the camp we sit down with you and go through the gaps and strengths we saw over the two days, where your child stands going into P4, and what to focus on in Term 1.

A school test tells you how many marks went. This tells you which ones, and why.

How the two venues on each run work

Both venues run at the same time, with one tutor in each classroom and the two rooms linked live. When one tutor is teaching a topic, she is on screen in both rooms while the other tutor walks the classroom and works with the children at their desks. Zoom families join the same live lesson from home. Whichever venue you choose, your child gets both tutors.

Who it suits

For P3 parents who want P4 to start on firm ground.

This camp is meant for the child who copes with P3 sums but slows down or guesses when a question turns into words. If your child already draws models happily, our weekly class is the better fit, and we will tell you so if you ask.

The camp is a good fit if you:

  • watched the Term 3 and Term 4 sums get longer and want the P3 basics firm before the P4 problem sums start;
  • want your child to meet P4 Angles before the class does;
  • want to see the actual marked paper and hear from the tutor where the marks are going;
  • are new to Genius Plus and want to see how we teach before the year starts.

Not sure? Send us your child's most recent problem-sum paper on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether this camp fits.

New to GPA

Your child does not need to have attended Genius Plus before.

Follows the MOE syllabus

Built on the MOE P3 and P4 syllabus, so it follows what your child did this year and what P4 starts with.

A word from Mrs Toh

"You plan for success. You do not wish for it."

One of my boys came home with 20 out of 30 for his Math weighted assessment and told me full marks was too far away for him. So I asked him: how far is 20 from 30? Very far, he said. Can you improve by one mark a day? Yes, he said, one mark is doable. Then how many days to 30? He thought about it. Ten.

Real life is harder than ten days, of course. But that is how I think about a child and Math. Our job as parents is not to panic. It is to find out which marks are going, fix one thing at a time, and let the small wins add up.

That is what these two days are for. We teach one, guide one, then let them try one, on the three P3 topics P4 needs. On Day 2 your child meets Angles, sits a paper, and the tutor marks it that afternoon. You go home knowing which marks are going and why, and where to start.
